Kavita Varma, Class of 1991, captained the women’s tennis team for three seasons while earning four varsity letters for Oberlin College. As a three-time NCAC Player of the Year (1989, 1990, and 1991), Varma won multiple All-Conference honors as a singles and doubles player. Her career was highlighted by three NCAA Division III National Singles Championship appearances and, in 1994, the conference awarded Varma with a slot on the prestigious NCAC All-Decade team. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in English from Oberlin in 1991, she earned a master’s degree from the acclaimed Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Varma has followed her love of journalism as a field reporter and editor for more than 10 years. She has been a reporter for the Wilmington (Del.) News-Journal and the South Florida Business Journal and served as an editor for the Miami Metro magazine and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. Varma is an active member of the community as well. She participates in the Victoria Park Civic Association and serves as a board member of Read-Aloud Delaware and Opera Delaware.
