David Staley was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1930 and attended Columbus North High School and Mercersburg Academy. He enrolled at Oberlin College in 1948 and received a bachelor of arts in physical education in 1952. While attending Oberlin Staley won nine varsity letters, three each in cross country, swimming, and track. He was a member of six Ohio Athletic Conference championship teams (three in swimming, two in cross country, and one in track), and he was captain of the 1951 cross country team. Staley was one of the top runners in the OAC throughout his collegiate career. As an individual at the OAC cross country championships, Staley finished second as a sophomore, third as a junior, and seventh as a senior. He took top honors and broke the course record in the six-mile Cincinnati Elks road race in 1950 and 1951. At the 1952 OAC swimming championships, Staley placed second in the 440-yard freestyle and fourth in the 150-yard individual medley. A middle distance runner for the Yeomen track team, Staley's top performances included a second-place finish in the two-mile run in 1950 and a fourth-place finish in the mile run in 1952. He received the M.S. degree from The Ohio State University in 1963. Stale was a mathematics instructor at Oberlin College in 1960-61. He moved to Ohio Wesleyan University as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1961, and he became a full professor in 1970. An avid triathlete, Staley was named to the 1988 Triathlon Today All-America Team.
