A three-time national qualifier in diving, Margaret Cheney is regarded as one of the best female divers in school history. Regularly attempting dives with high levels of difficulty, Cheney excelled among the elite competition she was up against due to the lack of divisions at that time.

In her senior season she placed second in the state in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, trailing just behind the eventual national champion from The Ohio State University.

A likely All-American had there been divisions, Cheney never finished outside the top five in state and top 10 in region during her illustrious four-year career.

During her time on campus she was a member of the tennis team, consistently playing in the middle of the lineup all four years.

After graduating from Oberlin she went on to a earn Ph.D. in mathematics from Indiana University in 1982. She has continued to dive at a competitive level, winning numerous U.S. Masters Championships in the women’s 50-54 division. She also won the 3-meter event at the FINA World Championships in 2006.
