Andrew Bent, a third generation Oberlin College student, received his A.B. in biology in 1983. Bent earned eight varsity letters in cross country and track and was elected to the position of co-captain five times during his career. He was named cross country team MVP in 1980 and 1981. At the 1982 OAC cross country championships, Bent placed first for Oberlin and 12th overall earning second-team all-conference recognition. At the GLCA championships that year, he placed fourth overall and was named to the All-Great Lakes cross country team. He was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships and had a career-best 12th-place finish as a senior. A distance runner with the Oberlin track team, Bent set the standard for the steeplechase in 1981 with a school-record time of 9:17.62, a mark that still stands. He was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA championships in the steeplechase and was named MVP of the Oberlin track team in 1983. After graduation from Oberlin, Bent continued his studies at M.I.T., completing his Ph.D. in 1989.
