C.J. Heckman, Class of '75, earned four letters (1972-1975) as a member of the Oberlin swimming and diving team. He was a three-time All-American and a two-time Ohio Athletic Conference champion. He earned All-America honors by placing 11th in the 100-yard backstroke and 5th in the 200-yard backstroke in 1972, and 8th in the 400-yard individual medley in 1975. Heckman was the OAC champion in the 200 butterfly in 1972 and the 400 individual medley in 1974. After receiving an A.B. in biology, Heckman was an assistant coach with the Oberlin women's swimming and diving team during the 1975-1976 season. From 1980-1983, he was an assistant coach with the Cascade Swim Club in Seattle, Washington. A research scientist on issues concerning the neurophysiology of the spinal cord, Heckman received his M.S. in kinesiology in 1983 and his Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics in 1986 from the University of Washington. He has received several National Institute of Health research grants, has published twenty research papers and four book chapters, and is a member of the Society for Neuroscience. He currently lives in Elmhurst, Illinois, and is a research associate professor and lecturer at Northwestern University Medical School.
