George Wiley, a member of the Oberlin Class of 1950, George Wiley earned seven varsity letters while at Oberlin including three in baseball (1948-50), three in soccer (1947-49), and one in track (1947). While a member of the soccer team, the Yeomen compiled a record of 19-2-3, including an undefeated season in 1949, and outscored opponents 84-26. A second baseman and center fielder on the baseball team, his teams had a three-year record of 21-19 and finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1950. After receiving his A.B. in English and British history, Wiley worked in Ohio secondary schools for 16 years as a history teacher and administrator and coach of football, baseball, track, and tennis. In 1955 he was named Outstanding Teacher at Euclid Senior High School. Wiley earned a Ph.D. from Western Reserve University in 1965 and went on to teach history at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Fellowship from the State of Pennsylvania as well as a Fullbright Exchange Scholar Grant Professorship in England in 1979. Wiley also was honored in 1993 with an Award of Distinction from the Officers of the American Wars for educational activities on World War II due to his contributions to his local newspaper with a ten-year running column called World War II Diary. During World War II he served in the United States Navy. He has also been active in the Culture Association, the North American Group of British Historians, and the Society for American Baseball Research.
