A prolific point producer throughout his career, Dave Herman still ranks second all-time in program history with 152 goals and 229 points.
A four-year starter and two-year team captain, Herman is one of just four players who ever donned the crimson and gold to have scored 50 or more goals in a season, which he did as a junior in 1989. He helped lead the Yeomen to an eight-win season as a senior, marking the team's best record in 23 years.
Erasing 30-year-old records throughout his career, he remains in the top four in the Oberlin record books in goals per game in a career (2.88), career assists (77), single-season assists (31), single-season points (78), points per game in a career (4.32), and points per game in a season (5.57 / 1990), Herman's love for lacrosse was unmatched he introduced others into the sport and is credited with starting the program's "fall ball" practices and even taught a winter term class called the 'Agon and the Art of Lacrosse' as a way to interest other students into the sport in addition to getting the current players ready for preseason training.
After playing for legendary coach John Linehan at Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, Herman's skills developed throughout his Oberlin tenure from a goal-scoring attackman to a well-rounded iron-man midfielder. He played defense, took face-offs, was instrumental in clearing, was a team leader in ground balls, and was consistently known to play his best against the Yeomen's biggest rivals.
After graduating with a degree in philosophy, the three-time All-NCAC selection went on to earn a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Illinois. After spending some time in Germany, Herman returned to the States to become an award-winning film producer, but lacrosse was never far from his mind as he has spent over 20 years coaching the sport at the club and high school level.
Herman's son, Leander, followed in his footsteps as a lacrosse and football player at Oberlin, graduating in the spring of 2024.
