One of the most accomplished basketball players in men’s program history, Homer Gilchrist called the Oberlin hardwood home from 1954-58. He was in the starting lineup his first game as a freshman, and he started in all the remaining games of his Oberlin career. During that era the Yeomen played 18 games a season, compared to the 25 they play now, and there was no 3-point line or shot clock. However, none of that prevented Gilchrist from etching his name into the record book.
A prolific rebounder, as a junior he set the single-game school record with 29 boards against Kenyon College on his way to becoming the all-time leader with 959 career rebounds. His abilities around the rim were complemented by his attributes as a scorer. He was the first Oberlin player to score more than 1,000 points in a career, finishing with 1,233 points to his credit.
