James White served as Oberlin College’s director of financial aid for over two decades (1967-1990). During that time and for many years after, Jim proved to be one of the most loyal and passionate supporters of Oberlin College athletics. He was a constant presence on the sidelines, attending countless athletics events throughout his lifetime.
A longtime member of the John W. Heisman Club and Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee, White also took the time to serve all the students at Oberlin and for that he has earned an everlasting place in the hearts of many people.
His passion for Oberlin athletics was contagious and his smile, uplifting. His commitment to Oberlin College and the community resulted in him being named the 2011 Oberlinian of the Year by the News-Tribune. White also received the Oberlin College Distinguished Service Award after years of dedication to helping others.
An avid football fan, each fall as football season approached, he would begin talking about the chances for success of his favorite teams, including Oberlin College, Ohio State, and the Cleveland Browns. He loved to point out to the Ohio State fans in the family that Oberlin College was the last Ohio team to beat Ohio State in football. (That occurred in 1921, and the score was 7-6). Jim was especially interested in following the football careers of high school players he knew who went on to play the game in college. His interest in football was cultivated as he was growing up with four older brothers and parents who enjoyed following the sport.
His unwavering loyalty to Oberlin athletics will now live forever with his induction into the Hall of Honor. James passed away on December 7, 2011.
