Virginia Covalt served the Oberlin College athletics department as an equipment room attendant in Philips and Knowlton for nearly four decades. She insists her interactions with students, staff, and alumni are the reason she lasted that long. Covalt started working in Philips on August 25, 1980 and retired December 31, 2016. She still believes some of our student-athletes still owe her money for not turning in all of their equipment. Covalt believes their favorite item to misplace was always the "greys." She was puzzled for the longest time why everyone liked those very ordinary grey sweatpants, sweatshirts and t-shirts so much. However, as she reflects back, she understands how much those pieces of cloth meant to the athletes who wore them. It was a sense of pride to not only don the greys on the playing fields, but in the classroom as well.
