Yeowomen Hang Tough With Nationally Ranked DePauw; Fall to Manchester

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team put forth a strong effort against the 19th-ranked Tigers of DePauw, but in the end the Yeowomen fell in straight sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-17.
 
The Yeowomen used a balance attack as seven different players had at least two kills in the match with first-year Claudia Scott leading the way with five.
 
In the opening set the Yeowomen trailed by just one, 15-14, following a kill from Ave Spencer. However, from that point on the Tigers took control of the set, scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull away for the win.
 
The Tigers kept the momentum going in the second session, extending a 7-5 lead out to 18-8 and never looked back.
 
The Yeowomen fought hard to extend the match to a fourth game, grabbing an early 6-5 lead before the Tigers opened a 16-10 advantage. The Yeowomen fought back to get within three at 18-15, but were unable to close the gap any further.
 
First-year Megan Cox led the defensive effort with 10 digs.
 In their second match of the day the Yeowomen dropped a 3-1 decision to the Manchester Spartans. Oberlin fell 25-18 in the first before regrouping to win the second 25-22.
 
However, in the pivotal third-set the Spartans eked out a 26-24 win before finishing off the match with a 25-19 triumph.
 
Ave Spencer guided the Oberlin attack with 12 kills on 31 swings, while Claudia Scott and Hannah Tyburski added eight kills in the setback. Spencer also had 12 digs for the Yeowomen.
 
Meredith Leung dished out 20 assists and added nine digs, while Molly Powers guided the backline with 21 digs.
 
Oberlin returns to action next Friday at Capital University.
