Oberlin, Ohio – Members of the Oberlin College women's tennis team combined to win 14 matches over three days at their own Oberlin College Invitational event over the weekend.
"We played well this weekend, especially considering that we've only been practicing for a few days,” Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis said. “Of course there are lots of things we need to get better at, especially in regards to our doubles. We also 'ran out of gas' there on Sunday in certain matches so we need to address our fitness level. The fact that we won most of the third sets we were in and came back from a set down or a large deficit in doubles in several matches is very promising to me as a coach and it speaks volumes as to this group's heart. We're picking up were we left off last year, which is a good feeling.”
Leading the Yeowomen effort throughout the weekend was senior
Farah Leclercq, who went 4-2 with a pair of wins coming in both singles and doubles. On Saturday she knocked off Alex Marcell of Denison, who finished last season ranked 16th in the region and was an All-American doubles player. However, Leclercq was able to upend her 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
In her second singles match on Saturday, Leclercq, a native of Ocala, Florida, bested Taylor Sweeny from Case Western Reserve 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Sweeny is the Spartans' top first-year.
In her lone singles loss, Leclercq fell to Denison's No. 1 freshman in Taylor Hawkins 7-5, 6-2. However, she did lead 5-4 in the first set, but was unable to covert the winning-point.
After earning a pair of singles wins on Saturday, senior
Preeya Shah had her 18-match winning streak snapped on Sunday. It was a school-record streak dating all the way back to February 29th, when she lost to a Division II player from Ashland University.
The tandem of Leclercq and
Grace Porter won a pair of doubles matches and Porter also added two victories in singles play. Against Meghan Letizia from Ohio Northern University, Porter saved off match points on multiple occasions to earn a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 12-10 win.
Additionally, the trio of first-years
Alex Kahn,
Erin Johnson and
Ariana Abayomi also earned their first collegiate wins over the weekend.
The Yeowomen will return to the practice court for the remainder of month, before taking on Carnegie Mellon and Robert Morris in dual matches the first weekend in October.
