Biography

John Charles '87 has been a career advisor for students in American University's School of International Service since 2006. His primary role is to support first and second-year undergraduate students by offering one-on-one and group guidance on job-search strategy and long-term career planning.

John's human resource background includes serving as program manager for ASPIRE (APEC Student Professional Integration and Reentry) and as education assessment and placement specialist at US Peace Corps headquarters. He is a professional educator and trainer with experience teaching English as a foreign language in Japan and middle school social studies and English in California. He has also served as a coach for youth basketball, soccer and track and field.

John has two two sons, one in college and the other in high school. At Oberlin John was a co-captain of the cross country and track teams his senior year.

"I am very excited to be joining the board, and look forward to assisting Oberlin student-athletes as they pursue opportunities beyond Oberlin.”
