John Erikson '61
When we think of John Erikson, we think of the national caliber tennis player he has been for decades! However, it turns out that before he retired from the working world, he actually developed software and instrumentation for the medical market.
He had dedicated his time tirelessly to Oberlin athletics. He served as the Heisman Club president and remains very active in guiding the board because he believes Oberlin athletes deserve as much support as possible.
John's fondest memory from Oberlin is never far from his side. He met his wife, Margaret at Oberlin, her freshman year. She was a cheerleader and he did his very best to impress her. Seems he succeeded!
He remains a constant source of support for Oberlin's tennis teams. This allows him to spend most of his time in sweats. The rest of his retirement time is spent gardening, woodworking and reading.
"I used to think that college athletics and fitness was for the "jocks". Now I think that athletics and fitness should be for all students."
Margaret Sahs Erikson '62
Margaret has played an essential role in the lives of Oberlin alumni for many years. She is the retired Director of Alumni On-Campus Activities for Oberlin's Alumni Office. It was in that capacity that she began her association with the Heisman Club, serving as liaison.
Margaret continued to work on special projects when her husband John was president of the Heisman Club. Her her influence and institutional knowledge remain essential to the Board. We would be lost without her.
Reading mysteries, volunteering for the Friends' of the Oberlin Public Library, and attending Oberlin's athletic events keep her busy as well.
Fondest memories of Oberlin nicely (and thankfully) compliment John's: meeting him her freshman year remains the highlight of her Oberlin experience.
"Before Title IX, women athletes participated in intramural sports. As a P.E. major before Title IX, I used to think activity was personally important. Now I think It's important for everyone to participate in regular physical activity."
