Box Score Holland, Michigan – For the first match of this weekend's double header, the Oberlin College men's tennis played Hope. In the 2025 season, the Yeomen had less than stellar results against Hope, losing 5-2 at a home game. Oberlin had their revenge today, beating the Anchors on their own home courts 4-3. Oberlin now holds a 5-2 record for the 2026 season.
On the top court, Sophomore
Enrique Margain and Freshman
Cameron Weiss tailed 5-0 after the first 20 minutes. Sophomore
Oliver Knijnenburg and Junior
Zain Makada at No. 3 doubles also struggled to build momentum in the opening games. Despite the early hardships, the Crimson and Gold bounced back to get on the board but ultimately lost at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
No. 1 and No. 3 doubles reached gracious losses with 1-6 and 2-6 scores, respectively. Meanwhile, on the No. 2 doubles court, the experienced senior duo,
Shawn Lisann and
Sebastien Naginski, captured a 6-2 win.
Though they had lost the doubles point, the momentum was slowly turned in the Crimson and Gold's favor. The No. 1 doubles pair redeemed themselves with near simultaneous victories in singles. Margain went down 1-4, but clawed his way back to a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4. Weiss took the lead and pushed his opponent to the breaking point, winning 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5.
Taking the lead, 2-1, Oberlin singles continued with the excellent performances. Smith closely followed Margain and Weiss with another win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4. The win marks Smith's sixth singles victory in a row. Makada played with undeniable skill and grit, but could not secure a win today, losing 3-6, 6-7 at two singles.
With the score at 3-2, the remaining singles matches came down to seniors Lisann at one and Naginski at six. Clinching for the second week in a row, Lisann battled his way to a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles. Naginski began with a 6-0 first set loss, but fought back in the second set, winning 6-3. Unfortunately, the third set did not go the senior's way and Naginski lost 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
Considering the dual match as a whole, Head Coach
Eric Ishida said, "Today was definitely a tough, gritty win on the road. [I'm] really proud of the team for sticking together and bouncing back after losing the doubles point."
The Yeomen will be playing the second match of their double header Sunday, March 1. They will compete with Kalamazoo on their home courts in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The planned start to the dual match is 2 p.m. EST.
