Granville, Ohio – Occupying the No. 3 seed in the most important tournament of the year, the Oberlin College men's tennis team put on a solid performance in the North Coast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals today. The Crimson and Gold cruised past sixth-seed Wooster, 4-0, seizing the doubles point and three singles matches. This victory brings their season record up to 15-6 overall.
In doubles, Wooster put up some strong resistance. The Fighting Scots won court two, 6-3, against Zain Makada and Enrique Margain. But the Crimson and Gold focused up and took back the lead. Shawn Lisann and Cameron Weiss at No. 1 doubles stayed one step ahead of their opponents, winning 6-4. To clinch, Sebastien Naginski and Dash Smith won six games in a row to come back from 4-0 down on court three.
Back with the momentum and up 1-0, Oberlin took three quick singles wins. Weiss brought the fire at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. Notably, these singles and doubles wins today are his 30th and 31st, respectively, for the first-year. Margain at No. 5 singles played consistently and reliably, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win as well. Naginski sealed the dual match victory for the Yeomen, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The remaining three singles matches were not given opportunities to finish, as Oberlin had already won. Smith at No. 1 singles was in the middle of a battle, competing for his first set in a seven-point tiebreaker, 6-6. Lisann at No. 2 singles had the advantage after taking his first set 6-4 and had just begun his second set, 1-1. Makada was on the way to a major comeback. Though he lost his first set 6-4, the No. 3 singles player had just taken the lead in the second set, 4-1.
Tomorrow, on Saturday, April 25, Oberlin will come up against Kenyon, the No. 2 seed, in the semifinals of the NCAC tournament. Rain or shine, match play will begin at 1:30 p.m.
