Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College juniors Kit Evans and Celia Vaughn competed today in the first day of the NCAC championships combined events, hosted at home. Evans completed five events of the decathlon, ending the day in seventh place with 2413 points. Vaughn contested four events of the heptathlon, scoring 1629 points for eleventh place.

With today's performances, Evans and Vaughn kicked off Oberlin's showing at the NCAC outdoor track and field championships. The combined events – the decathlon for men, and the heptathlon for women – are contested the weekend before the main championship, to allow athletes to return in individual events and relays. In the combined events, athletes earn points tied to their results in each event. The highest total score wins, testing athletes' versatility and endurance across both the track and the field.

The first event of the day was the 100m dash, in which Evans clocked 12.56 for 545 points. Next, he leaped 5.33m in the long jump for 447 points. Evans skipped his last attempt in the event, sparing the strain on a tweaked hamstring.

The shot put was Evans' strongest event, as he threw 10.43m for 512 points. The mark placed Evans third in that event and improved his personal best by six centimeters.

Following the shot, Evans cleared 1.53m in the high jump to score 411 points. Lastly, the decathlete ran 57.61 in the 400m dash. The run was good for 498 points and fifth place in the event.

Vaughn, meanwhile, opened the day with a run of 18.67 in the 100m hurdles, scoring 422 points. The junior then cleared 1.20m in the high jump for 312 points.

Like Evans, Vaughn was strongest in the shot put. Vaughn launched the 4 kg-sphere 8.05 meters for 403 points and eighth place.

Closing out the day in the 200m, Vaughn ran 29.86 for 492 points.

Head Coach Ben Wach noted how Evans and Vaughn's strengths align in the combined events.

"Celia and Kit are similar athletes, in that their best events come last. Today, they kept themselves in contention, and set themselves up for a strong day two. Tomorrow, we'll see them make up ground in the javelin and the final 1500 or 800."

Tomorrow, Evans will complete the decathlon with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m. Vaughn will return for the long jump, javelin, and 800m. The decathlon resumes at 11:00, and the heptathlon at noon. Live results are available, and the competitions will be streamed on Oberlin Sports Network.
