Volleyball Opens Season at Great Lakes Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sandusky, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team opened up the 2022 season this weekend at the Great Lakes Crossover at Sports Force Park in Sandusky, Ohio.

The Yeowomen split their Friday matches that each went the distance. Oberlin finished on the wrong end of a 25-14, 11-25, 25-19, 8-25, 13-15 scorline against Thiel before closing the evening with a five-set win over Eastern Mennonite University by the counts of 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12.

Oberlin concluded the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of the Allegheny Gators, winning 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.

Sophomore Cami Sweet led the charge against the Tomcats, producing a team-high 17 points on 11 kills to go along with three solo blocks and three block assists while hitting a team-best .333.

Junior Andréa Jones added eight kills on 25 swings, while rookie Zeynep Kaya had an impressive all-around debut with seven kills and 11 digs to accompany a block assist. 

Overall, the Yeowomen struggled with their consistency, combining for just 19 points in the second and fourth sets as they finished the match hitting just .109 as a team. 

Taylor Gwynne dished out 19 assists with first-year Jillian Jendsen contributing six helpers in her first collegiate match. 

Lindsey Felton paced the back row effort with 13 digs and added two aces.

Andréa Jones and Cami Sweet each registered 15 kills to lead the Yeowomen to their first victory of the season on Friday evening. Sweet was a force at the net as she added seven block assists and two solo blocks. 

The Oberlin offense had a much better rhythm in the nightcap as they used a diverse attack to outlast the Lions in the five-set affair. Zeynep Kaya added seven more kills, a team-high three aces, and 10 digs while senior Iyanna Lewis had six send-downs in the win. Lauren Sands added five kills while Taylor Gwynne snuck in four.

As a team, Oberlin .241 in the match with Gwynne steering the ship with 23 assists while Lucy Myers also added 15 helpers while seeing time in all five sets. 

Lindsey Felton finished with a team-high 12 digs while Jones aided the effort with right. 

Oberlin will conclude its opening weekend today at 2 p.m. against Allegheny.

Oberlin made short work of its former NCAC foe, earning the three-set victory to cap off the weekend at 2-1. 

Andréa Jones led the attack with 13 kills on 29 swings, while Cami Sweet continued her hot start at the net with 10 kills as she hit .471 in the match. 

Lauren Sands aided the offense with eight kills while rookie Zeynep Kaya chipped in with four to go along with a game-high 11 digs. 

Taylor Gwynne had the offense in rhythm with 23 to go along with two aces. 

Rookie Jillian Jedsen dropped in six aces as the Yeowomen racked up 13 in the match. 

Oberlin returns home to host Waynesburg on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
