Bexley, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision at Capital University on Wednesday night, falling 25-23, 25-16, and 25-20.
Cami Sweet was a bright spot for the Yeowomen as she led the attack with nine kills on 14 swings, hitting an impressive .571 along the way.
Andréa Jones added six finishes, while first-year
Josie Macdonald chipped in with five kills on six attempts for a .667 clip.
Lucy Myers handled the setting duties as she distributed 24 assists to accompany her seven digs. Rookie
Jillian Jendsen paced the back row with 10 digs, while Sweet and
Natalie Dufour aided the defensive effort with three total blocks each.
Oberlin trailed just 14-13 at the midway point of the opening set and Comets attack error later evened the count at 19-19. A send-down from Sweet leveled the frame at 22-22 but back-to-back points from Capital left them just one point away from finishing off the victory which would come in the form of an Oberlin attack error.
Oberlin never really threatened in the second or third stanzas, ending the night with just a .149 hitting percentage. The Comets finished at .230 clip while more than doubling up the Yeowomen in aces with a 12-5 advantage.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 7-4 on the year while the Comets moved to 6-7.
Oberlin returns to the court on Saturday as it opens up NCAC play against DePauw University at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Hanover College at 1 p.m.
