Volleyball Hangs Tough with No. 19 Albion

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team put forth a valiant effort against the 19th-ranked Britons of Albion but in the end, it wasn't enough as the visitors left Philips Gym with a straight-set victory by the scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-19.

Cami Sweet continued her torrid play to lead the Oberlin attack as the 6-foot-1 middle hammered home nine kills while going error free on 13 swings for a .692 success rate. The sophomore from San Diego, California, added two solo blocks and a block assist to finish with 11.5 points on the night.

First-year Josie Macdonald contributed six finishes, while Lauren Sands chipped in four kills to go along with a pair of aces. Taylor Gwynne dished out 21 assists and snuck in three kills in the loss.

First-year Jillian Jendsen celebrated her birthday by leading the back row with eight digs.

Oberlin was within striking distance in the first set, trailing just 16-13 but a 6-0 Britons' burst left no doubt in the eventual outcome.

The Yeowomen jumped out to an 8-5 edge in the second stanza to force an early Albion timeout but the Britons would follow with a 9-4 response to grab a 14-12 advantage at the midway point. A kill from Sands later evened the affair at 15-15 but the battle-tested Brits pulled away down the stretch to earn the win.

It was another strong start for Oberlin in the third, racing out to a 6-2 advantage only to see the Brits level the set at 9-9 on a Jenna Schienke kill. Oberlin answered with three consecutive points but a 5-0 Albion spurt gave them a 14-12 margin. The Yeowomen later trailed by just one at 16-15 but the Brits would bear down by scoring eight of the nine points to finish off the victory.

Albion, which moved to 18-2 on the year, hit .333 in the match with Olivia Alexander leading the charge with 13 kills while Jesse Hepner dropped in 10.

The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon at Denison University. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
