Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a straight-set affair at Denison University on Saturday afternoon, falling by the scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-21. The Yeowomen move to 7-11 overall and remain winless at 0-4 in conference action.
Iyanna Lewis had a breakthrough game to lead the Oberlin attack as the right side hitter hammered home nine kills while suffering only one error on 21 swings. The veteran also added a pair of block assists to finish with a team-high ten points.
The trio of Andréa Jones, Natalie Dufour, and Josie Macdonald contributed more than five kills each, while Cami Sweet chipped in three block assists to go along with her four kills. Taylor Gwynne dished out 28 assists and snuck in a pair of aces and kills in the loss.
First-year Jillian Jendsen guided the back row effort with 14 digs, aided by Gwynne and Macdonald with eight each.
Oberlin was within striking distance in the first set, holding at 19-12 lead but the Big Red offense exploded for a 13-4 run to sink the Yeowomen.
The home team's momentum continued into the second set as they got ahead 9-2 quickly and maintained the lead through the end.
The Yeowomen finally found balance in the third set as they battled back-and-forth, settling at an 8-8 tie. From there, Denison caught fire again and went on a 5-0 run until Sweet slowed the damage with a kill set up by Gwynne. Chipping their way back into the game, Oberlin tallied a 5-0 run of their own to come within one of the lead. Eventually, the conference foes pulled ahead in the final points to earn the 25-21 victory.
Denison, which recorded its fifth-straight sweep hit .217 in the match with Kelly McCaskey leading the charge with 13 kills while Sophie Tight offerered in 30 assists.
The Yeowomen are back in action at home on Wednesday night as the Hiram College Terriers invade Philips Gym for a 7 p.m. conference clash
