Box Score 2 Latrobe, Pennsylvania - The Oberlin College volleyball team opened the season in commanding fashion, downing the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets in straight sets by the scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-23.
The Yeowomen used a diverse offensive attack to set aside the Yellow Jackets with relative ease.
Maura Gibbs led the way with seven kills on 18 swings, while
Natasha Radic,
Emery Beacom and
McLean Sammon each had six finishes. Beacom and Sammon combined for 23 attempts and went error free as they had a .545 and .429 hitting percentage respectively.
Samantha Lam had the offense in rhythm as she dished out 18 assists with rookie
Iyanna Lewis also contributing eight helpers in the victory.
Gibbs and
Zoe Kuzbari led the way with 11 digs each, while Beacom also aided the defensive effort with six block assists and two block solos.
The second match was the complete opposite for the Yeowomen as they dropped the three-setter to Westminster 20-25, 21-25, 18-25.
Sammon led Oberlin with 12 kills while Beacom recorded nine. The offense again ran through Lam who set up her hitters with 22 assists while registering 16 digs.
Kuzbari had another good defensive match with 12 digs while Lewis registered a pair of blocks.
Oberlin has a quick turnaround as it plays another two matches tomorrow against Pitt-Greensburg at 2:00 p.m. followed by LaRoche College at 4:00 p.m.
