Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team enters the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will take on No. 5 Ohio Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Yeowomen finished the regular season with a record of 8-14 and 2-6 in the NCAC, earning league wins over Denison and Allegheny. Oberlin will be looking to avenge a straight-set loss to the Bishops (11-13, 4-4 NCAC) back on September 29.
"We have come a long way since that last match OWU," Head Coach
Erica Rau said. "We ended the regular season playing some of our best volleyball to date and I am confident we can carry that over into the weekend."
The Yeowomen enter the tournament having won three out of their last four matches, which included the conference triumphs over the Big Red and Gators.
Oberlin will need a strong performance from junior
Lexi Mitchell to get by the Bishops as she comes as the NCAC's top point producer with an average of 3.82 kills (3rd in the NCAC) and 0.51 aces per set (2nd in the NCAC). The Fort Mill, South Carolina, native enters the tournament red hot as she has produced double-digit kills in eight of the last nine matches.
While Mitchell leads the way, Oberlin has a plethora of capable servers as senior
Sara Chang and
Maura Gibbs each have 29 aces while senior
Emily Kelkar has dropped in 28 of her own. As a team, the Yeowomen rank second in the league with an average of 2.06 aces per set.
Defensively at the net, first-year
Emery Beacom is ninth in the league with 0.66 blocks per game, while teammate
Jaya Flynn-Young is 12th at 0.63. Flynn-Young also boasts a team-high .273 hitting percentage, which ranks seventh-best in the NCAC. Along the back, Kelkar's 3.83 digs per set are good for ninth in the conference.
If the Yeowomen get by OWU in the opening round, they will take on the fourth-seeded Kenyon College Ladies on Friday night at 7 p.m.
