Volleyball Drops a Pair in Springfield

Box Score Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Wittenberg University.
 
The Yeowomen first tangled with No. 1 Wittenberg before squaring off against the Muskingum University Muskies. Oberlin entered the day riding a four-match winning streak, but saw that come to an end as its record fell to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC.

The Yeowomen held their own against the Wittenberg Tigers, who entered the match ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll. However, the Tigers were still able to earn the straight-set win by the scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-15.
 
Sophomore standout Lexi Mitchell had her talents on displays as she led the Yeowomen with 12 kills, while classmate Maura Gibbs chipped in with seven to lead the Oberlin attack.
 
The Yeowomen registered 44 digs in the match with Emily Kelkar leading the way with 12, while Mitchell added 10 in the setback. Samantha Lam had 26 assists and seven digs.
 
Oberlin struggled with consistency, hitting just .049 in the match with 32 kills and 26 errors on 122 swings.
 
The Yeowomen, which are one of the best serving teams in the NCAC, also had just one ace in the match while the Tigers dropped in five.
 
The second set proved to be the closest of the trio as the Yeowomen trailed just 17-15 midway through following a kill by Jaya Flynn-Young. However, the Tigers would close the game on an 8-1 run to leave no doubt in the outcome.
 
Muskingum Recap
 
Oberlin could not get into rhythm against the Muskies, falling in straight sets by the scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-19.
 
The Yeowomen hit a season-low -.034 in the match with 21 kills against 25 errors on 115 total attacks.
 
Senior Dana Thomas led Oberlin with nine kills on 23 swings. Mitchell would add seven kills to end the day with 19 finishes. The Fort Mill, South Carolina, native also added 10 digs in the loss.
 
Kelkar led the backline unit with 18 digs.
 
Oberlin will be back in action on Wednesday night when it welcomes crosstown rival Case Western Reserve to Philips Gym. The first serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
