Box Score Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team wrapped up the regular season, challenging itself against two nationally ranked opponents in No. 7 Wittenberg and No. 21 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen dropped both matches in straight sets, falling 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23 to the Tigers before succumbing 25-20, 25-11 and 25-13 to the Tartans.
On the day,
Lexi Mitchell totaled 20 kills, while
Ave Spencer chipped in with 13. Playing for the final time in Philips Gym, senior
Meredith Leung had 32 assists and four aces.
Wittenberg Recap
Against the Tigers, Mitchell was impressive with 13 kills and three aces, while Leung added four aces and 19 assists.
The Yeowomen certainly held their own against the prominent power and that should give them confidence heading into next week's NCAC Tournament where they will get a rematch in the opening round.
Spencer was a difference maker throughout the match as she hit an impressive .529 with 11 kills and just two errors on 17 swings.
In the second set, the Yeowomen rallied from a 22-16 deficit to put the pressure back on the Tigers. A block assist by
Dana Thomas and Mitchell made it 23-21, but the Tigers were able to bounce back to go up 2-0.
In the third, back-to-back aces from Mitchell had the Yeowomen out in front 14-13 and they would later lead 19-18. A kill from
Maggie Middleton tied it at 22-22 and it was then even at 23, however, the Tigers closed the match and the set with two straight points.
Emily Kelkar led the defensive effort with 14 digs in the match.
Wittenberg, which host next weekend's NCAC Tournament as the top seed, finished the conference schedule at a perfect 8-0. The Yeowomen, who are the No. 8 seed, ended at 1-7.
Carnegie Mellon Recap
After an emotional battle with the Tigers, the Yeowomen were sluggish in their match against No. 21 Carnegie Mellon.
Oberlin was never able to get into any rhythm, hitting just .110 for the match. After notching 16 kills in the first set, they recorded just 10 over the final two games combined.
Mitchell led the way with seven kills, while the next closet player had just three.
The Tartans used a balance attack as 13 different players had a kill in the match as they hit .360 as a team.
The first set was tied at 17, but the Tartans would ultimately pull away down the stretch for the five-point win.
The next two games were not close as the Tartans moved to 23-6 on the year. Oberlin fell to 7-17 with the loss.
Oberlin will play top-seeded Wittenberg in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament on Friday night at 7 p.m.
