Box Score 2 Gettysburg, PA – The Oberlin College volleyball team earned a character-building win, outlasting Penn-State Altoona in five sets in its first match of the day on Saturday. However, the Yeowomen would fall in match two to Gettysburg in four sets, 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25.
Against Altoona the Yeowomen used a late rally in set four to extend the match to a decisive fifth game. Altoona snuck out a 25-23 win in the opening frame, but Oberlin bounced back with a 25-13 triumph in game two before being defeated 25-20 in the third.
Trailing 2-1, the Yeowomen had their backs against the wall in the fourth set as they were behind 24-21, but a kill from
Maddy Dunn kept the Yeowomen alive. First-year
Claudia Scott then came through with two of her 14 kills in the match to even the score at 24. Another kill from Scott would later make it a 26-25 Oberlin lead and then off of Scott's serve Altoona had an attacking error to give Oberlin the set.
With the momentum now on their side the Yeowomen wasted no time in finishing off the Lions, racing out to 10-3 advantage before claiming a 15-7 match-clinching victory.
Sophomore
Hannah Tyburski matched Scott with a team-high 14 kills on 35 swings. She committed just two errors in the contest en route to hitting .343. As a team the Yeowomen racked up 55 kills.
Maggie Middleton matched Dunn with eight kills each to help bolster the attack.
Sophomore standout
Meredith Leung was over the floor as she had 35 assists to go along with a team-high 25 digs and three service aces.
Molly Powers aided the Oberlin effort with 18 digs and also dropped in four aces.
Against the host Bullets of Gettysburg the Yeowomen dropped the first two sets by the scores of 25-20. However, they jumped out to a 10-2 lead in set three and fought off a late Bullets' charge to win the third 25-19. However, in the fourth the Bullets flipped that score around to win the match with a 25-19 victory.
The Yeowomen had 46 kills in the match, but made 31 errors to hurt their efforts of pulling off a Saturday sweep. Scott continued her aggressive play at the net; totaling 11 kills while Dunn added 10 finishes against just four errors to finish with a team-best .231 hitting percentage in the match.
In the third-set win the Yeowomen were more fluid on offense, hitting .222 in the frame.
Oberlin had three players finish with double-digit digs. Powers, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the way with 25, while Scott added 14. Leung rounded out the trio with 10.
Oberlin will be back in action next weekend when it host SUNY-Geneseo on Friday night at 7 p.m.
