Volleyball Splits a Pair to Start the Season

Gettysburg, PA – The Oberlin College volleyball team had no trouble with Penn State – Harrisburg, winning 3-0, but fell to McDaniel College 3-1 to open the season at the Battlefield Classic on Friday night at Gettysburg College.
 
The Yeowomen handled Harrisburg with relative ease, winning in straight sets by the scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-22.
 
Sophomore Ave Spencer led the Yeowomen attack with 14 kills on 17 swings, hitting an impressive .824 for the match. The sophomore duo of Maggie Middleton and Jillian Hostetler added five kills each to help supplement the Yeowomen offense.
 
One of the best serving teams in the NCAC in 2013, the Yeowomen picked up right where they left off with 13 aces in the match. Rookie Claudia Scott matched Spencer with a team-high four aces in the three-set win. Scott also added seven digs in the contest.
 
Second-year setter Meredith Leung racked up 19 assists to go along with nine digs. Junior Molly Powers led the defense with 10 digs.
 
The Yeowomen registered 36 kills against Harrisburg, but had just 28 in a 23-25, 25-23, 11-25, 14-25 loss.
 
Despite the outcome, Coach Rau was really impressed with the team's effort, especially in the second-set victory.
 
Sophomore Hannah Tyburski led the offense with 10 kills, while Maddy Dunn added seven finishes in the setback.  Spencer recorded six kills to finish with 20 on the day.
 
In the second-set win the Yeowomen hit .200 with 13 kills on 35 attempts.
 
Leung was credited with 20 assists in the match, but first-year Megan Cox also did a fine job in running the offense with 14 helpers.
 
Powers dug out 23 balls in the match, while Krista Langhans helped the cause with 11 digs of her own. She also added a team-best four aces.
 
The Yeowomen will be back in action tomorrow against Penn State Altoona (12 p.m.) and host school Gettysburg (2 p.m.).
