Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team used a 15-6 run over the final 6:29 to upended the visiting Allegheny College Gators 67-58 on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
The game's 16
th and final tie came on a pair of Ryan Stanko free throws to make the score 52-52. However, the Yeomen went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes that featured a clutch 3-pointer from freshman
Jack Poyle and two strong finishes at the rim by
Randy Ollie and
Emmanuel Lewis to put the game away.
The Yeomen had 10 different players score at least one point in the game, but just one finished in double figures. Senior
Geoff Simpson spearheaded the Yeomen attack with 17 points, while Ollie and
Austin Little each added nine in the win.
Playing at home for the first time since December 7, the Yeomen got off to a strong shooting start, connecting on 50-percent (12-of-24) of their shots in the first half. The first 20 minutes featured 10 ties and five lead changes alone with no more than four points separating the two teams.
Five straight points from
Miles Gueno gave Oberlin a 21-17 advantage at the 8:53 mark of the opening frame. Allegheny battled back to grab a 28-25 cushion with 3:28 to go, but the score was ultimately tied at the intermission, 32-32.
In the second half the Yeomen trailed 44-40, but would turn that four-point deficit into a four-point lead with an 8-0 run that was capped on a Poyle jumper with 9:19 remaining in the game. A minute later the Yeomen were up 50-46, but the Gators rallied to tie it at 52, before the Yeomen were able to pull away.
Oberlin improved to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC. Allegheny dropped to 3-11 and 0-7 in the league.
The Gators had three players score in double figures with Stanko leading the way with 19 points. Josh Valentic added 16 points, all of which came in the first half.
Oberlin shot 48-percent (24-of-50) in the game, but struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 14-of-23 freebies for a 60.9-percent clip. The Gators, who were out-rebounded by the Yeomen 33-26, shot 42.9-percent (21-of-49).
The Yeomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Hiram College at 4 p.m.
