Oberlin, Ohio – After notching four wins in a row, the Oberlin College men's basketball team dropped a close contest against the Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night. The Yeomen sit 5-3 overall after opening their North Coast schedule.
Zach Smith led the charge with 15 points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist. This is the third game this season, and second consecutive game, that the senior has scored 15 points. Also finishing in double digits were
Rob Magner (12),
JJ Gray (11), and
Milun Micanovic (ten). The trio combined for 14 rebounds, with Micanovic doing the heavy lifting and pulling in eight of his own.
Matt Andreopoulos dished out four assists to go along with his nine points, while
Sam Kamenko and Gray added a block apiece.
The Yeomen opened the game quickly, serving a layup right off the whistle. Wooster responded, but Magner's three-pointer opened up a 13-6 run for Oberlin that spread the lead by nine. A fast-break dunk for the Fighting Scots at 1:53 claimed a short-lived lead, but Smith tipped the ball in to give Oberlin a 32-30 advantage at the half.
Oberlin came out of the break and stretched the lead to seven after back-to-back three-pointers from Andreopoulos and Smith. The visitors rallied over the next four minutes to tie the game again, this time at 42-42. The Crimson and Gold battled to stay even with Wooster, but the Fighting Scots scored 12 unanswered points to claim a commanding, and lasting, lead.
Down 56-49 with five minutes remaining, Oberlin battled back within two of their North Coast foes. However, as the minutes waned in the contest, Wooster shut out the Crimson and Gold through the final three minutes to secure a road victory.
Suffering a loss in their conference opener, Oberlin hits the road for their next matchup, taking on Wabash on Saturday, December 6. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
