Oberlin Battles Denison in Philips

Oberlin, Ohio - Opening with a strong scoring streak, the Oberlin College men's basketball team battled Denison in a close match on Wednesday night. The Crimson and Gold shift to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in North Coast action.

At the forefront of the Oberlin offense, Zach Smith registered a season-high 23 points while also recording six rebounds and a pair of steals. Milun Micanovic followed with 10 points and led the Yeomen with nine rebounds. Performing well on the defensive end, Sam Kamenko produced three steals and a pair of blocks.

Oberlin opened the scoring on their first possession with a jumper from Smith. Following a Denison three-pointer, the Yeomen delivered 12 unanswered points to secure a commanding 14-3 advantage at 11:58. A Big Red jumper broke the scoring drought two minutes later as Zach Bronson followed with a layup to reclaim Oberlin's 11-point edge. Both teams exchanged points for the remainder of the period as the Crimson and Gold maintained a 22-14 lead going into the break.

Following a shot from Smith behind the arc at 16:06, Denison responded with their own three-pointer to launch a 12-point surge, allowing the Big Red to produce a narrow 32-31 advantage. Liam Gray knocked down a triple after receiving a pass from Kamenko to reclaim the lead for Oberlin, but Denison responded with a layup at 10:16 to tie the Yeomen.

Augustus Donohue notched a long-range shot with 1:36 remaining to close Oberlin's gap to two, but the Big Red pulled away with a 7-0 run. A three-pointer from Smith helped reduce the margin, but the late push secured the 63-55 victory for Denison.

The Yeomen will travel south to Wilmington on Sunday, December 14. Afternoon tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
