Pittsburgh, PA – Sophomore Maddy Dunn and first-year Jillian Hostetler combined for 23 kills to lead the Oberlin College volleyball team to a convincing, 3-0, win over Carlow University on Saturday afternoon on the campus of La Roche College. The Yeowomen then advanced to defeat Waynesburg University in three games to take third place at the La Roche Tournament.
"It was a great weekend for us," Head Coach Erica Rau said. "To go 3-1 in a span of less than 24 hours is very impressive. Each of the matches were great team victories where everyone contributed. We were close in a few matches last week and to get our first wins of the year is a very good feeling. I am proud of the way we played."
Against the Celtics of Carlow, the Yeowomen racked up 16 kills in a 25-21 win in set one, and then followed with 25-16, and 25-17 victories to cap off the straight-set triumph.
Dunn hit an astonishing .765 as she was error free in the match, finishing with 13 kills on 17 swings. Hostetler would add 10 finishes of her own, but the attack was balanced overall with Christine Antonsen contributing with seven kills, while rookie Krista Langhans chipped in with five.
Defensively, the Yeowomen frontline was able to dramatically slow down the Celtics'o attack, finishing with eight total blocks in the match. Rookie Ave Spencer had five block assists, while Meredith Leung and Antonsen each added three assisted denials.
On the backline, sophomore Molly Powers racked up 15 of the team's 41 digs. Spencer also helped the cause with 10.
In their second match of the day, the Yeowomen picked up right where they left off by taking down Waynesburg 27-25, 25-18 and 25-13.
The Yeowomen used a balance attack to finish with 38 kills for the match. Antonsen led the way with nine finishes, while Spencer and Dunn each added eight.
Powers was all over the court as she dug up 21 balls in the match and did a great job in getting it to Leung who recorded 36 assists.
"Molly was big for us against Waynesburg," Rau added. "She really did a great job in extending some rallies that led to some key points in the match.
Oberlin is scheduled to return to action on Friday evening when Augustana College (IL) comes to town for a 7 p.m. clash.
