Volleyball Drops a Five-Set Thriller in Home Opener

Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College volleyball team battled the visiting Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University tooth-and-nail for five grueling sets, but ultimately ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
 
The match started off great as Oberlin hit .324 in the first set en route to a convincing, 25-18, win. However, the Yellow Jackets evened the match with a 25-23 victory in the second. Oberlin regrouped to win the third by a 25-21 count, but the Yellow Jackets would push the match to five after taking game four 25-19. In the decisive fifth set, BW would push past the Yeowomen for a 15-9 win to secure the match.
 
Things started off great for Oberlin in the fifth as junior Christine Antonsen dropped in two service aces for the first two points of the game. Following a kill from Ave Spencer, the Yeowomen led 4-1, but the momentum was short-lived. The Yellow Jackets would eventually tie the match at 5-5 and later grab a 10-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets would finish the job by earning five of the next seven points. With the win they improved to 2-3 on the year, while the Yeowomen fell to 0-5. However, it was their second straight five-set loss.
 
Rookie Hannah Tyburski led the Yeowomen attack with 16 kills. Maddy Dunn (11), Christine Antonsen (11) and Spencer (10) all registered double-digit kills as well in the loss. Dunn was the most efficient of the foursome with a .320 hitting percentage.
 
Rookie Meredith Leung did a solid job in orchestrating the offense as she recorded 43 assists on the night while matching Molly Powers with a team-high 24 digs.
 
As a team Oberlin had 103 digs. Joining Powers and Leung in double-figures were Spencer with 17, Shavonne Stanek with 14 and Krista Langhans with 13. Langhans also recorded a team-best four of the Yeowomen's 10 service aces.
 
Oberlin returns to action this weekend at La Roche College where they will take on Franciscan University and Washington & Jefferson College on Friday before squaring off against Carlow University on Saturday.
