Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team trailed in all three sets, but Yeowomen displayed their toughness by rallying to win all three games in a 26-24, 26-24, 25-23 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The triumph marked Oberlin's first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season.
In the opening set, the Yeowomen were staring at a 13-8 deficit, but then ripped off six straight points to grab a, 14-13, lead. It would remain nip and tuck for the rest of the set, but two Bishops' errors down the stretch helped the Yeowomen secure a 26-24 win.
In the middle part of the second game, Oberlin trailed 20-17, but another five-point run that featured an ace from
Christine Antonsen and a sneak-attack kill from rookie setter
Meredith Leung made a 22-20 Oberlin advantage. OWU would fight back to make it 24-24, but rookies
Jillian Hostetler and
Ave Spencer would each follow with vicious attacks that left no chance for a return en route to the victory.
In the third and final set, it appeared that the match was headed to a fourth set as the Yeowomen trailed 22-18. However, once again the team rallied by scoring seven of the game's final eight points. Hostetler came through with the match-clinching kill.
Hostetler finished with a team-high 11 kills. Antonsen added eight kills, while first-year
Hannah Tyburski chipped in with seven. As a team, the Yeowomen hit .196 in the match, but were much better in the second and third sets, checking in at .214 and .333, respectively.
Leung led the way with 28 assists and also got into the attacking mode with five kills.
Molly Powers controlled the backline with 13 digs, while
Ave Spencer added 11 digs to go along with two block assists and one block solo.
Oberlin will look to make it two wins in a row when it returns to action on Wednesday night at home against Allegheny College. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
