Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team fell to the visiting Vikings of Augustana College in four sets on Friday night at Philips Gym.
After dropping a tightly contested first set by a 25-23 count, Oberlin bounced back to win the second 25-17. Unfortunately, the Vikings would respond to take third, 25-17, before clinching the match with a, 25-18, victory in the fourth.
First-year Hannah Tyburski led the Yeowomen with 11 kills, hitting an impressive .320 on the night. Sophomore Maddy Dunn was error free, finishing off six of her 10 swings. Junior Christine Antonsen also added seven kills in the setback.
In the opening set Oberlin trailed 22-16, but nearly came all the way back to steal the game from the Vikings. Following an ace from Meredith Leung, a kill from Dunn made it a 24-23 game, but unfortunately the Vikings were able to secure the game on the next rally, which ended in a kill from Laura Hedden.
In the set-two win, the Yeowomen found themselves down early, facing a 9-4 deficit. However, they rallied to tie the game at 10-10 and eventually pushed their lead out to 18-14 on a finish from Antonsen. From there, the Vikings would get no closer than three points.
Regrettably, the Yeowomen were unable to maintain the momentum as their offense fell out of rhythm for the final two sets.
Leung dished out 24 assists on the night to go along with 11 digs. Molly Powers paced the defense with 16 digs, while rookie Ave Spencer added two solo blocks and one block assist.
The Yeowomen return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against La Roche College.
