New Wilmington, PA – The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped its first match of 2013, falling to Carnegie Mellon University in straight sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14. The Yeowomen later fell to Penn State-Behrend 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.
Newcomer
Hannah Tyburski paced the Yeowomen with six kills, while sophomore
Maddy Dunn added five finishes of her own in the setback.
Jillian Hostetler and
Christine Antonsen also chipped in with four kills each for the Yeowomen.
Playing in her first collegiate match, first-year
Meredith Leung ran the Oberlin offense and finished with 22 assists in the match. Oberlin's most efficient set was the first of the match when it had 10 kills on 33 swings.
First-match jitters were certainly evident as the Yeowomen finished with 25 attack errors in the loss.
Defensively, Oberlin was led by rookie
Krista Langhans and
Molly Powers who combined for 22 digs.
The Yeowomen's second match against Penn-State Behrend was more closely contested, but the Yeowomen still fell in straight sets.
Tyburski had nine kills, while Antonsen added seven in the loss.
Leung had 25 assists and matched Powers with 11 digs.
The Yeowomen nearly had their first set of the season in the third, but despite 12 kills the Yeowomen fell short 25-22.
Oberlin plays twice more tomorrow afternoon.
