Yeomen Get Back on Track Against Alma; Fall to Hope

The Oberlin men's tennis team improved to 9-6 on the year with their victory over Alma

Holland, MI The Oberlin College men's tennis team started the NCAC/MIAA Challenge off with a 5-1 win against Alma College on Friday morning at the DeWitt Tennis Center, but dropped their second match of the day to regionally ranked Hope College, 8-1.

The Yeomen started by taking two of the three matches at doubles. The duo of junior Charlie Marks and senior Ben Turchin won in No. 1 doubles 8-5, while freshman Callan Louis and sophomore Soren Zeliger took second doubles by the score of 8-5, as well.
 
The freshmen team of Brandon McKenna and Paul Goebel fought hard in No. 3 doubles before suffering a 9-8 (7-5) defeat.
 
Oberlin took the match, 5-1, when they won three matches in singles play.
 
Zeliger won his second match of the day when he defeated Gordon Rumschlag in fourth singles, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Senior Eliot Heaton took No. 5 singles by the score of 6-2, 6-1, while McKenna rounded out the Yeomen winners in sixth, 6-3, 6-2.

Hope Recap
 
Against the Flying Dutch who are ranked No. 13 in the region, it was Marks who provided the lone point of the match for the Yeomen. The Oberlin senior bested Parker Bussies in the first 7-6, winning the tie-break 7-1 and then took the second set 6-3.
 
The Yeomen dug themselves a hole by dropping all three doubles flights, but each match was closely contested. Marks and Turchin fell at No. 1 8-3, while Louis and Zeliger gave Bussies and Jason Muller all they could handle at No. 2 before ultimately falling 8-5. McKenna and Goebel also dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
 
In singles play Eliot Heaton had a close match with Cody Herbruck at No. 5, but fell short in a 6-4, 6-2 setback. At No. 6, Mckenna also tested Davis Vander Veen, but he too was dispatched by a 6-4, 6-1 score line.
 
The Yeomen will conclude the MIAA-NCAC Challenge tomorrow morning with a match against Calvin College starting at 10 a.m.
