Springfield, Ohio – Sunday, the Oberlin College men's tennis team took a solid dual match win over Wittenberg, scoring 7-0 against the Tigers. The team's winningest regular season since 2016-2017 concludes at 14-6, 6-2 in conference matches.
Wittenberg fielded four players out of the usual six due to team limits, so No. 3 doubles, along with No. 5 and No. 6 singles, were given to Oberlin by default. Oberlin was left with just a doubles and singles win until victory. Along with this lead, men's and women's players took to the courts at the same time due to the small Wittenberg teams. The match had double the voices, along with double the momentum behind the Oberlin tennis teams.
Doubles was over quickly as experienced teams, Shawn Lisann and Cameron Weiss at No. 1, along with James Foster and Sebastien Naginski at No. 2, took to the court. No. 1 doubles took a cold and calculated 6-0 win. No. 2 doubles took their time, achieving similarly great results in a 6-1 win.
The Yeomen closed out the singles round quickly and efficiently. Brady Huggett at No. 3 singles used his opponent's errors to his advantage, taking two sets in half an hour and winning 6-0, 6-1. Lisann on court one also chose a more passive approach, farming errors and net points until a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Naginski on court two made sure to cheer on his teammates while still playing, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win to add to his record. Rowan Ing at No. 4 singles sent groundstrokes right down the middle until victory, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Notably, the sophomore had his first career singles win today. He remarked, "Well, gosh. The pressure and nerves of a singles match never change. But to be behind a team and have a team behind me now, winning has never been so sweet."
Next week, the Yeomen enter the North Coast Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament as the No. 3 seed, a result of their hard work and good results in the earlier season. Play will take place at Denison and begin on Friday, April 24, at 1:30 p.m against Wooster.
