Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team started its day with a 3-0 win over Allegheny to advance to the fifth-place match of the NCAC Tournament. However, in that match it was the Ladies of Kenyon College who outlasted the Yeowomen in five sets.
The Yeowomen won the first set 25-20 before dropping the next two by two points each, 25-23 and 27-25. Oberlin regrouped to take the fourth game 25-19, but Kenyon rallied to score the final four points of the fifth set to win 15-13.
With the loss Oberlin concluded its 2013 season in sixth place in the NCAC, finishing at 12-19 overall and with a 4-4-conference record.
In the decisive fifth set a 4-0 spurt that featured a Meredith Leung service ace and Jillian Hostetler kill made it a 13-11 Oberlin advantage. However, back-to-back Yeowomen attack errors evened things at 13. The Ladies would then finish the game courtesy of a Sierra DeLeon kill and another Oberlin attack error.
In the opening set the Yeowomen raced out to a 14-5 lead and never looked back. They had 12 kills in the game and hit .125.
In the Ladies' second-set win, Oberlin held an early 12-7 advantage, but Kenyon fought back to tie it at 14-14 before outlasting the Yeowomen for the two-point win.
The Ladies grabbed a 2-1 lead, using an Oberlin service error and a DeLeon kill with the score tied at 25 to earn another two-point triumph.
However, the Yeowomen did not want their season to end just yet as they rebounded to win the fourth set in convincing fashion, recording 10 kills in the game.
First-years Ave Spencer and Hannah Tyburski led the Yeowomen attack with 11 kills each in the match. Leung had a big part in their success with 39 assists to go along with a team-and career-high 26 digs.
As a team the Yeowomen recorded 86 digs in the match. Sophomore Molly Powers also matched a career-best with 25 digs in the contest.
Oberlin had 19-3 advantage in service aces with Leung and Shavonne Stanek tying for a team-best with five each.
A year after finishing in seventh place in the NCAC Tournament, the Yeowomen advanced to the fifth-place match by defeating Allegheny College in straight sets, 25-21, 25-23 and 26-24.
In each of the final two sets Oberlin and Allegheny were tied at 23, but in each game the Yeowomen prevailed. In the second set, a kill by Spencer evened the match at 23. Tyburski followed with one of her team-high 11 kills and then an Allegheny attack error clinched the game.
In the match-clinching third set it was Tyburski and Spencer who factored in again. Tyburski's kill tied the match at 24 and then after a Gators' attack error, Spencer finished the match with one of her six kills.
Leung guided the offense with 31 assists to go along with five service aces and five digs.
Junior Christine Antonsen added to the attack with eight kills. Defensively, Krista Langhans led the way with 13 digs.
The Yeowomen lose just one senior off of this year's team and are poised to show even more progress in 2014.
