Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team won its second straight North Coast Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night, upending Allegheny College in four sets at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen earned a relatively smooth 25-20 win in game one, before using a thrilling come-from-behind finish to steal away the second set 26-24. The Gators would try to make a match of it by winning the third set, 25-21, but the Yeowomen would not be denied, taking the match with a 25-20 win in game four.
With the win the Yeowomen improved to 6-11 on the year and ran their NCAC record to 2-3.
"Winning that second set the way we did was the turning point in the match," Head Coach
Erica Rau said. "We just never gave up and found a way to get it done. If we don't pull that out, the result may have been different."
Oberlin was trailing 19-14, but would use a 7-3 run to get within one at 22-21. An ace from
Shavonne Stanek capped off the spurt, which featured four kills from junior
Christine Antonsen. Later in the set, Oberlin faced game point down 24-22, but back-to-back kills from
Hannah Tyburski evened the score. Fellow rookie
Meredith Leung would complete the improbable comeback by dropping in back-to-back service aces to give Oberlin the game.
In the game-clinching fourth set Oberlin opened up a big lead early and was never really challenged. The Gators got no closer than four points as the Yeowomen worked their way towards 25.
Antonsen had the best game of her collegiate career, recording career-highs in kills (17) and aces (5). Tyburski also finished with 13 kills, while rookie
Ave Spencer completed a trio of double-digit finishers with 10 kills of her own. Spencer also added 16 digs in the victory.
Leung recorded a four-set career-high of 45 assists to go along with 12 digs.
Molly Powers led the way defensively with a team-high 19 digs.
The Yeowomen will be in action on Saturday on the campus of Penn State – Greater Allegheny. They will take on Penn State- Greater Allegheny at 2 p.m. before going up against Penn State-Fayette at 4 p.m.
