Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team downed the visiting Lions of Penn State New Kensington, 74-50, on Monday at Philips Gym.
With the win, the Yeomen snapped a mini two-game losing skid and improved their record to 3-4 on the young season, while already surpassing their win total from a year ago.
Oberlin was led by junior swingman
Andrew Fox as he cashed in a season-high 21 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Sophomore
Geoff Simpson also recorded his first-career double-double with 15 points to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior point guard
Josh Merritt finished just one assist and one field goal shy of his first-career triple-double as he ripped down a career-high 10 rebounds and matched a career-best with nine assists while also posting eight points.
Oberlin led from the onset and never really let up in the first half, grabbing a 30-14 lead with 4:35 left in the period. The Lions would get it down to eight, 30-22, with just over two minutes left thanks to Lamont Wright who cashed in six of their points during the 8-0 spurt. However, OC would take a 36-22 lead into the locker room thanks to back-to-back triple-hits from Simpson and Fox.
In the second half the game was never really in doubt. Oberlin extended its cushion out to 25, 63-38, with 7:29 to play and cruised to the victory.
Oberlin shot 42.4-percent (28-of-66) overall and was 6-of-18 (33.3%) from 3-point land. The Lions finished with a 35.1-percent (20-of-57) success rate.
The Yeomen also dominated on the glass by a count of 46-37. Of those 46 boards, 18 came on the offensive end which turned into 21 second chance points. OC also netted 21 points off of 22 turnovers.
Oberlin won't have much time to celebrate the win as it goes right back to work on Wednesday night when NCAC foe Hiram College comes to town for an 8 p.m. tip. The game will be preceded by the Yeowomen's match-up with Hiram that starts at 6 p.m.
