Alliance, Ohio – A great team effort by the Oberlin College volleyball team lifted them past the Adrian College Bulldogs in five sets in their final match of the Mount Union College Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
After dropping the first game 25-19, Oberlin regrouped to win the next two by the scores of 25-22 and 25-19. The Bulldogs forced the fifth set with a 25-19 win in game four, but Oberlin proved to be too strong in the end, winning 15-4 in the clincher.
“Everyone on the team contributed to this win,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We really played together and showed some of our potential in what we can do when we play as a team.”
Junior
Amanda Wysk turned in her best performance of the young season as she hit an impressive .463 with 21 kills on 41 attacks. She also added 13 digs in the match.
Making a bid for a spot on the all-tournament team,
Maggie Jacobson continued her strong consistent play in the middle by hitting .444.
Moving to a new position on the court,
Liz Wong stepped-up with an error-free match as she converted four of her seven swings into kills to go along with 11 digs.
Orchestrating the potentate OC attack was senior
Rita Kaplon with 45 assists in addition to 11 digs.
Senior libero
Tammela Platt guided the season-high digs total with a team-best 14.
Oberlin will have another look at Adrian later in the year, as the Bulldogs are scheduled battle the Yeowomen at Philips Gym on October 2.
Oberlin dropped its first match of the day against Alma in straight sets by the scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-18. The team returns home with a 2-3 record to start a six-match homestand on Friday night against Notre Dame College.
The 2009 Mount Union All-Tournament Team will be announced later this evening.
