Alliance, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team pushed Defiance College to five sets, but couldn't finish the job as they fell to the Yellow Jackets 25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-9 in match one of the day at the Mount Union Tournament. The Yeowomen also fell to Case Western Reserve in straight sets 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.

“Our first-years stepped up and played well, especially against Case,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “Maggie (Jacobson) also had a strong night, but we need to work on getting more disciplined to eliminate the mistakes we made today.”

An early injury forced the Yeowomen to adjust their lineup, but that didn't prevent them from taking the second and fourth sets against the Yellow Jackets in their lid-lifter match of the tournament. Junior Maggie Jacobson turned in a strong performance in the middle by hitting .292 to go along with four blocks. Rookie Laura Jesse also stepped up with five blocks and a .273 attack percentage.

Jesse and Jacobson also guided the way in the nightcap against the Spartans. Jesse, a native of Roanoke, Virginia, recorded a team-high nine kills to go along with five more blocks in the match. Jacobson, a 2008 All-NCAC Honorable-Mention selection, added eight kills on 16 swings.

Adapting to a new position on the right side, Rosie Eck displayed great body control to hit .375 – converting five kills on eight attempts.

The Yeowomen also got great energy and court presence on defense from follow newcomer Chinwe Okona.

Oberlin returns to play at the Mount Union Tournament tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Alma. The Yeowomen also have a second match later in the afternoon against a to-be-determined opponent.
