Box Score vs. Kenyon
Meadville, Pa. – The Oberlin Volleyball squad started off a weekend full of conference matches with a gutsy five set victory over Kenyon College (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves Oberlin back to .500 (6-6, 1-0 NCAC) and is their fourth victory in their last five matches. Over that stretch, OC has won 14 of their last 20 games, an impressive 70 percent clip.
Kenyon got on the board first winning the opening game relatively easily, 25-18. Despite being unable to find their rhythm throughout the match, Oberlin showed some resilience though as they quickly evened the score with a 25-23 win of their own. Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said, “Game two was huge! You never want to go down 2-0 to start a match and we hung tough and won some important points just when we had to have them.”
The Yeowomen dropped a close third game in large part due to a stingy Kenyon defense that consistently kept the ball off the floor. Nevertheless, Oberlin brought everything they had to finish off the match winning the last two games.
Cavanaugh added, “We definitely can play better, but this was the first time this season we have overcome a deficit twice in one match. I am so proud of how we finished and I think that this will really help our confidence as we continue play against some quality opponents this weekend.”
Oberlin bounced back and found their stride for their second match of the day against Ohio Wesleyan. The Yeowomen survived a few rocky points in game one and played confidently the rest of the way as they rolled over OWU 28-26, 25-18, 25-19.
“
Amanda Wysk played really well today…
Maggie Jacobson continues to work hard and give a consistently great effort in every match…
Rosie Eck really hit the ball well against OWU” commented Cavanaugh.
Oberlin has now won five of their last six matches and 17 of their last 23 games! They will head back out to the court in Meadville on Sunday for day two of the Allegheny Tournament. At 12 pm Oberlin will play Denison and they will wrap up the tournament at 2 pm against Hiram.
