Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team completed its weekend homestand with a 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 21-25, 25-17) win over Manchester. Earlier in the day the Yeowomen also dropped a hard-fought decision to Carnegie Mellon 3-2 (25-19, 13-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-9).
Amanda Wysk continued her strong play in the victory, recording a team-best 17 kills. The rookie tandem of
Laura Jesse and
Rosie Eck also combined for 21 kills in the match. Senior
Rita Kaplon got the offense in rhythm by dishing out a season-high 45 assists while matching teammate
Anna Frackman with 13 digs.
The Yeowomen trailed 16-11 in the opening set, but ripped off a 12-2 run en route to the 25-20 win. After a tightly contested second set, the third stanza also featured a pair of runs. Oberlin got off to a quick 7-1 edge, but the Spartans responded with an 11-4 spurt to grab the lead. OC regrouped to lead 19-15, but Manchester would prevent the sweep by closing out the game 10-2. In the clincher, the Spartans got as close as 17-16, but Oberlin took match by scoring eight of the game's final nine points.
Jesse and Wysk combined for 24 kills in the lid-lifter match of the day against the Tartans. Senior
Tammela Platt led the defensive effort with a season-high 34 digs.
After dropping the first set, Oberlin bounced back in a big way to grab a 17-4 lead out of the gates en route to a convincing 25-13 win. However, the third act of the match was not as easy as there were nine ties along the way before the Yeowomen were able to escape with a 26-24 victory. Unfortunately, CMU regrouped to claim the final two sets and the match.
The Yeowomen recorded a team-high 89 digs with Frackman, Kaplon and Wysk combining for 41 to go along Platt's 34.
Oberlin continues its six-match homestand on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Ursuline College. Fans that cannot make it to Philips Gym to watch the match are encouraged to view the live webcast online.
