Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team rallied from a set down, coming from behind to beat the visiting Adrian College Bulldogs in five sets (25-14, 21-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-7) on Friday night at Philips Gym.
“I was proud of the way we responded tonight,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “With our backs against the wall we were able to fight through the adversity and get a win. Our outside hitters did a great job in bringing us back and Rita (Kaplon) just continues to improve each match in running our offense.”
It appeared as if Adrian was going to leave town with the win, leading 23-19 in the fourth set, but a resilient Yeowomen squad had other ideas as they battled back to tie it at 24 all before claiming the win. The clinching point came in dramatic fashion as junior
Maggie Jacobson came through with a big block on game point.
With the momentum now in hand, Oberlin jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the clincher and never looked back. As a team, the Yeowomen went error free in the fifth set converting nine of 18 swings.
Amanda Wysk led the offensive attack with 14 kills. Middle
Rosie Eck added 10, while Jacobson and
Anna Frackman contributed seven apiece. Senior
Rita Kaplon finished two assists shy of a season-high with 43.
Tammela Platt spearheaded the defense with 18 digs, while Frackman added 13 of her own. Jacobson finished the night with three total blocks.
Oberlin, which has now won seven of its last 10 matches to improve to 9-8 on the year, returns to action on Wednesday night at Case Western Reserve.
