Box vs. Kenyon l Box vs LaRoche
Sept. 20 - Oberlin kicked off their home schedule in a big way with a three game sweep of conference foe Kenyon College. After having spent the better part of the last three weeks on the road, today's match was indeed a welcome homecoming for the injury-riddled and road-weary Yeowomen. Playing in the friendly confines of Philips Gym, Oberlin dispatched of Kenyon 25-13, 25-10, 25-14.
First-year hitter
Courtney Konow led the Yeowomen with 11 kills in the match. Sophomore
Maggie Jacobson continued her consistent play combining with first-year
Sara Blankemeyer for 15 more of Oberlin's kills. Oberlin coach Carey Cavanaugh said, “It was really a great team effort. We were able to serve consistently and really took them out of their offense for the entire match.”
The total team effort could be seen with contributions from a number of players on and off the stat sheet. Other terrific contributions were made by
Rita Kaplon, who notched 26 assists, while
Anna Frackman and
Kaitlyn Moushon combined for 20 digs in the match that took Oberlin just 112 points to win.
Oberlin also posted a season best attack percentage (.413) in the first match of the homecoming doubleheader. The win over Kenyon evens their conference record at 1-1.
In Saturday's nightcap, the Yeowomen built off their afternoon success and found a way to win big points when it mattered most en route to another three game victory. Oberlin got the best of visiting LaRoche and made quick work of the Redhawks 25-23, 25-14, 25-23.
Once again the key to victory for the Yeowomen was a consistent service game putting pressure on Redhawks offense. Oberlin was paced in the middle by Jacobson who tied a season-high with five blocks.
Anna Frackman also played a huge role in the win as she converted on 12 of 28 kill attempts and finished the match without posting a single error, an unusual and practically unheard of feat in collegiate volleyball.
With the win, the Yeowomen finished their Homecoming Saturday with a 2-0 record at home and are yet to drop a single game on their home court. They will look to build upon this weekends' success when they face two tough conference foes on the road next Friday (at Wittenberg 8:00 pm) and Saturday (at Earlham 12:00 pm).
