The Oberlin College volleyball team gave the Allegheny College Gators all they could handle, but fell just short as they dropped a 3-2 decision on Wednesday night in what was the conference opener for both schools.

“This was the best match we played all season,” head coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We still have some work to do and clean some things up, but it was a good way to start the conference season.”

Oberlin had its best attacking effort of the year led by Anna Frackman as she converted .306 percent of her swings on the night. First-year Sara Blankemeyer was also impressive on offense – hitting .296 for the match.

The defense for OC also shined as they registered a season-high 93 digs. First-year Kaitlyn Moushon spearheaded the effort with 33 digs of her own.

The Yeowomen rallied from behind in both the first and third sets to take a 2-1-match lead. After taking the first game 26-24, Oberlin rebounded from a 4-0 start by the Gators for a 25-20 win in set three.

Coming off a 25-16 defeat in set four, Oberlin and Allegheny were knotted a five to start the race to 15 in the final set. The Yeowomen were on the doorstep, down 10-9, but the Gators eventually pulled away for a 15-11 victory to claim the match.

Oberlin will finally commence its home schedule on Saturday with tri-match against Kenyon and LaRoche as part of the athletics department homecoming weekend. The Yeowomen and Ladies will first do battle at 3:30 p.m., with the nightcap against LaRoche set for 7 p.m.
