Volleyball Falls a Few Points Short vs. Wilmington

Box vs. Wilmington l Box vs. John Carroll

Oct. 25 –
Coming off a physically and emotionally draining match against Wooster on Friday night, Oberlin was able to take Wilmington to the fifth set, but was unable to finish off the match losing 3-2.

Oberlin opened up the match with a 25-23 win in a back and forth set that saw both teams in the lead. Steady play by setter Rita Kaplon helped Oberlin get out to an early 1-0 lead. Wilmington bounced back in a big way dominating the next two games winning them by a combined score of 50-26.

As Oberlin has been able to do at times this season, they shrugged off two less than stellar games and found an answer for the Wilmington attack. This youthful resilience propelled the Yeowomen to a 25-19 victory that evened the match at 2 games a piece.

In the deciding game the Yeowomen battled hard, but seemed to run out of gas towards the end and fell just a few points short of the victory. Anna Frackman was the leading hitter in the match and along with Kaplon the catalyst that kept Oberlin close in this non-conference action. Playing at John Carroll, Wilmington improved their record on neutral courts to 8-4, while for some reason that is the one venue Oberlin has been unable to find success in.

In the second game of the non-conference double-header, Oberlin was defeated by the host, John Carroll 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-20). Oberlin was able to play better in each game, but were simply outplayed on this day.

Oberlin enters the final week of their regular season and will wrap up their schedule with games against Denison, Hiram and Case Western.
