Oct. 22 – The Oberlin Women's Volleyball team entered conference play just a half game behind Ohio Wesleyan for sole possession of fifth place in the Northcoast Athletic Conference. After the clock chimed an end to Wednesday October 22, 2008 a stellar performance had concluded and the Bishops found themselves now trailing a half-game behind the Yeowomen.
Playing with potential playoff implications on the line, on the road in a difficult environment, and in attempts to avenge an earlier loss this season, the Yeowomen outlasted the Bishops in four sets 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21.
The player of the game on this night was without question Oberlin's starting setter
Rita Kaplon. The junior standout controlled the court with ease, ran the offense with meticulous precision, and consistently made great decisions over and over again. Her ability to read the OWU defense and place balls exactly where they needed to be kept the Bishops out of sync and on their heels in all four games. Kaplon finished the four-game match with 48 assists, 12 digs, and most importantly 1 win.
Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said of Kaplon, “this was the best match of her career to date, and it couldn't have come in a bigger game.”
The win over Ohio Wesleyan moved Oberlin into fifth place and marked the fourth different conference opponent that OC has beaten this year. It also ties the school record for NCAC wins in a season (6) that was accomplished only once before in 1992. Perhaps even more impressive in this latest run is the fact that for the first time in school history Oberlin has won three consecutive road conference matches (Hiram, Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan).
There is little doubt that Oberlin seems to be playing their best volleyball at the right time. They are 4-2 in their last six games and they are building confidence that has seen them improve in the conference standings in each of the last three weeks. They will look to continue the roll this Friday (October 24) as they host the College of Wooster at 7:00 pm.
