Oct. 18 – Coming off a Friday night defeat against one of the top five teams in the country, Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh was not sure what to expect from her young team. However as has been the case for much of the year, this Oberlin team has been able to forget quickly, learn lessons, and move forward in a big way.
They did exactly that this afternoon dominating visiting Earlham College en route to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-20) victory. Oberlin's hitters put the ball away with skill, precision, and consistency throughout the match.
Anna Frackman led the way with 13 kills, hitting .414. Sophomore
Amanda Wysk also reached double-digit kills with 12. First-years
Elizabeth Wong and
Lindsay Boven also contributed to the win hitting .571 and .500 respectively.
After cruising through the first two sets and grabbing a commanding 13-7 lead in the third set, Oberlin withstood a charge that tied the game at 17. Consecutive aces by first-year
Sara Blankemeyer and a defensive positioning error by the Quakers gave Oberlin momentum and a lead that they would not relinquish.
Beating both Kenyon and Earlham this week has propelled the Yeowomen past Denison in the NCAC conference standings and the crimson and gold will end the weekend right on the heels of Ohio Wesleyan.
Oberlin's climb in the standings will lead to a pivotal clash this week on the road against the Bishops of OWU with important playoff implications (Tuesday, October 21, 7:00 pm). After the match Cavanaugh said, “Its great to see our girls play consistently well for an entire match and be able to put everything together from start to finish…again. We are certainly going to continue to build off this week, and traveling to Ohio Wesleyan should be a good test for us. But today this team earned another conference sweep, which is never easy, and I hope they enjoy it…next week, then its back to work.”
After playing OWU this Tuesday, the Yeowomen will return home to host The College of Wooster next Friday at 7:00 pm.
